18/10 Cloudy, dry, cooler, yet still calm

Still no sign of the high pressure shifting, though we're told in the weekly forecast that this week will see the high finally relent and allow low pressure areas to move in to the north later in the week.  For now though, it's as you were: cloudy, dry, calm but just a little cooler.

17/10 More of the same...

Cloud again, a little sunshine for a time in the afternoon, but nothing substantial.  Again dry (we're into the fourth week of dry weather now) as the high pressure that's snaking several thousand miles from Scandinavia, over us and on to the Azores, stays put.

Another day of cloud, never really dull, but really nothing different from earlier this week.  The weather is in a real rut at the moment, but still being under the influence of high pressure, we're staying dry and calm.  Normally we'd be seeing autumnal storms or frosts at night by now, so whilst this spell isn't an Indian summer, we're doing quite nicely.

A similar day to yesterday really, mainly cloudy but with one or two sunny spells.  Once again an easterly wind, but just as yesterday was noticeably warmer, so again we saw high temperatures today too.

An easterly is a rare direction for us, and the old folk saying tells us that a wind in the east is "no good to man nor beast." But here I think we're benefiting a little from the föhn effect - an Alpine term for the warmer, drier winds on the leeward side of the mountains. Being to the west of the Pennines, normally we are right in line for the moist winds off the Irish Sea. But with the wind coming from the other direction, any moisture carried by the wind is deposited over the other side of them thar 'ills, so our dry weather of the last couple of weeks continues.

The mist was thicker this morning, so no surprise that it persisted for longer than we've seen recently.  As such, the temperature remained much lower than we've seen recently, a reminder that we're in October now. Despite this, optimism was high that the sun would burn through; sadly this was not to be, so overall a marked contrast to the weather from the last week or more with quite thick low cloud,  leaden skies and a cool feel.
