Another nice day, but cool in a stronger breeze

Another nice day throughout.  Still conditions through the night allowing temperatures to fall to 4.9°C, the lowest recorded since 10 June.  But then fine weather with plenty of sunshine meant temperatures climbed, not to anything spectacular, but with a cool airflow, a high of 16.3°C wasn't too bad.  Being out for a time in the afternoon, the chill in the air was noticeable, particularly when the sun popped behind a cloud.  But we're in a settled spell of weather at the moment and after a disappointing summer, being out in the sun was still welcome.

Overnight rain then fine if a little cool

Slightly surprised to wake up this morning to a wet lawn and flags, more than a heavy dew would cause.  Sure enough, there'd been a shower during the night, nothing unusual about that perhaps, though with high pressure slowly becoming dominant I didn't expect any rain.  The morning was clear, cool, but sunny, and although fair-weather cloud developed during the daytime, there was nothing threatening and we had some good spells of sunshine.

August Monthly Report

The typical weather for this August has broadly followed the same trends as most other months so far this year, particularly on temperature where once again it's been a little cooler than normal.  Rainfall in August has actually been significantly less than expected, though more days than average have seen some rain.

The reasons behind both these headlines are one and the same: mainly Atlantic weather producing more than our share of frontal systems and spells of unsettled weather.  Yet we haven't been troubled too much by low pressure, as the chart below shows.  Nor have we battled with strong winds (an average wind speed of just 3.9mph is nothing untoward).  No - the story of August 2015 is more that we just haven't had a sustained spell of high pressure to bring the warm sunny weather we want to see.
Air pressure chart for August 2015

Back to temperature: the mean temperature for August was 15.3°C, slightly below the typical August average for Blackburn of 16°C (Weatherbase.com).  Our mean maximum figure was actually almost a degree higher than expected, but the mean minimum was nearly two degrees cooler.  The lowest temperature for the month was a chilly 6.4°C on the 12th - not what we want to see in August.

Rainfall for the month was 46.2mm, lower than our expected figure of around 65mm (msn.com).  But this year we've had rain on more days than we'd expect - 21 days have seen rain against an expected figure of 18, and this ties back to the weather patterns we've been seeing - frequent spells of wet (not especially wet, but wet nevertheless) weather coming in off the Atlantic.

As we move into September, we're already seeing dryer conditions take hold, and it will be interesting if a more settled pattern of weather will stick around for long as we head into meteorological Autumn.

More sunshine so feeling warmer

To all intents and purposes a similar day to yesterday, in that calm conditions and blue skies early on gradually gave way to more cloud and a breeze.  But whereas yesterday the cloud continued to build to hide the sun, today we had much less cloud develop and consequently much more sunshine. Feeling really quite chilly in the early morning, but warming nicely over the middle part of the day as the September sunshine got to work.

Remaining cool, cloudy but dry

Staying cool, cloudy and dry once again with a steady but benign breeze developing during the warmer part of the day.  The tiniest amount of rain was detected overnight but to all intents and purposes another fine day.

The weather is in a curious phase at the moment, with a strong low pressure just to the west of Denmark and a large area of high pressure about 400 miles west of Ireland.  This is bringing strong winds and some rain to the north-east coast and eastern England, but further west we're in a relatively dry stream of northerly winds.  And there's little sign of a change...

Cool, blustery with threat of showers

Another cool and blustery day - the wind contrasting with still conditions through the night.  Coming from the north, the wind was never going to be warm, so feeling especially nippy early into September.  Despite some threatening clouds during the afternoon, it stayed dry, except for an isolated shower just after sunrise.

Cool, showers in afternoon

Cool, with the wind in the north or north-west.  Starting clear with plenty of sunshine, but the clouds started building from the word 'go' and by early afternoon there were some brief but heavy showers, all accompanied by a blustery wind that contrasted sharply with the still conditions from earlier in the morning.
