Wet and blustery

Some overnight rain, but a drier spell for rush hour meant I didn't get wet on the way to work.  By mid-morning though another band of rain moved in, which was slow to clear.  It did though, eventually, so the evening was drier but quite cold.  It was chilly all day in a blustery northwesterly wind.

The promised rain arrives

Rain arrived overnight but by morning this first band of weather had passed through.  Skies were dull with a hint of drizzle in the air but we were promised a very soggy rush hour so this was much better.  There was more rain later in the morning and skies remained grey and angry throughout, but by afternoon the clouds broke and we had an hour or so of sunshine, even if temperatures remained unremarkable.  This didn't last too long though - heavy and squally showers started to move in from the west, including a really sharp one just as I was bringing Matthew home from nursery.

Bank holiday sunshine

It's a bank holiday Monday, the first of a run of three in the UK that aren't these days seen with any great significance other than the opportunity for a day off during the warmer part of the year.  Of course this usually means rain will never be far away, but this year the weather seems to have its timings wrong.  There is a band of organised rain that will visit Blackburn overnight tonight (and probably for the bulk of tomorrow too), but today the weather today has played fair and given us some reasonable warmth and plenty of sunshine.  The cloud has been building slowly through the afternoon but too late to keep us in!

April 2015 Monthly Report

April 2015 has generally been quite kind to us with fine, dry and quite warm weather the dominant feature during the month, certainly throughout the first 3½ weeks anyway.  The tail end of the month was a let-down by comparison, but even so we recorded our highest temperatures so far (only since November 2014, remember), and the month as a whole came in as our driest yet.

April started cool, damp and dreary, but, apart from Good Friday (the 3rd), the weather improved steadily until a couple of bands of rain brought a brief unsettled spell close to the middle of the month.  After this, the pressure built up again and we had over a week of prolonged dry weather, with warm sunshine and light winds.  During this spell our temperature record was broken twice and we had three consecutive days in the low 20s, reaching almost 70°F.  By the time the fine weather broke on the 24th, we'd also been exceptionally dry (for April), seeing only 21.9mm of rain (and a third of this fell on the first day of the month).

Temperature Chart: April 2015

It's a pity the last week couldn't live up to what had gone before - the temperatures dropped dramatically back to what they were at the start of the month, the wind picked up bringing a noticeable wind chill with it, and we had a further 24.3mm of rain, more than doubling our monthly total.

Cumulative Rainfall, April 2015

Finding 'typical' stats for Blackburn isn't easy, but the best figures I can find suggest that this year's April holds up well, but not exceptionally so.  Our average high was about 1½°C higher than we should expect, but our average lows were cooler by a similar amount.  April is usually one of the drier months, but, depending on which figures you use, this year has been slightly drier than usual.

The unsettled weather to end the month has carried into May, but by the time we can produce May's report then there's still every chance of us having some more better weather once again.

Dark clouds but dry after overnight rain

Heavy rain during the early hours but afterwards skies brightened, bringing some spells of sunshine between plenty of cumulus cloud.  Despite the forecast hinting of heavy showers during the afternoon, and even though some clouds were dark and ominous, the rain stayed away and it didn't feel too bad in the afternoon sunshine.  There was a noticeable wind all day, reminding us that we are in between a trio of low pressure areas to the north, west and south.

Dull and damp

Not a great start to the bank holiday weekend, drizzly rain quickly moving in and settling over us for most of the day.  Feeling really quite cold in the wind that veered around from west to north and then north-northeast, with a maximum of only 8°C, and feeling only like 5°C - more like early March rather than May.

A cool but dry start to May

A fairly nondescript day really - fairly cloudy and cool with northerly winds nudging the temperatures down despite some sunny spells every now and again.  Thankfully after a few days of rain to end April, we had a dry start to May, but the forecast is fairly unsettled at the moment so there's not much chance it'll last.
