A nondescript kind of day

Perhaps my lexicon of adjectives is letting me down today but I'm struggling to find a suitable way of summarising the day.  Fairly dull and overcast, not especially warm but not cold either.  The odd splash of sunshine and we managed to avoid the showers too, but really for July we should see better.

Getting better

A brighter morning, still some clouds around and not as cold as forecasted. With the wind in the north, temperatures were predicted to fall almost to freezing, unheard of here in July, but in the event, although cool, we were some way above this.  If anything, the sky gradually improved during the day, not in a continuous steady way, but by the evening rush hour the sun was shining brightly and it suddenly felt like summer again!  Perhaps all is not lost yet!

Another drizzly morning with thickish fog on the hills above Darwen, visibility down to about 100-150 yards. Yes this is July folks!  The weather today was basically a repeat of yesterday - but worse! Temperatures a tad down, the wind a little stronger and more in the way of rainfall.

Foggy start

A foggy start over the hills, particularly over the tops to Bolton, as I made my way there via the replacement bus service.  The day didn't improve, with frequent spells of drizzly rain, more persistent than yesterday, and these continued into the evening until quite late on.  Still feeling very cold for July - this month has seen huge contrasts in daily maxima, from 31°C at the start of the month to what is becoming a regular 16°C near the end.

Actually a bright start with some nice morning sun and blue sky, but the forecasted rain arrived by 11ish right on schedule and stuck with us for the rest of the day.  Not a complete washout, and when it was raining it was a lightish drizzle, but nevertheless a day for being indoors.  Staying cool.

Relief! Sunshine, dry and a little warmer

Well I think some folk must have been praying to the Gods as we have had a pleasant day, unbroken sunshine until mid-morning with some fair weather cloud bubbling up throughout the rest of the day.  Pleasantly warm in the sun, but still a cool feel to the air which is noticeable when the sun hides behind a cloud.  Only a small niggle though - this is much more like it, it's just a pity there's more rain forecast for tomorrow.

Damp start and heavily overcast all day, though surprisingly no rain actually recorded throughout the day.  Cool in a brisk northwesterly breeze.  Remaining cloudy with grey and dark clouds even into the evening.  Elsewhere we visited Heysham after tea, where we did get wet for a time, and we encountered further rain on the motorway home.

Cool and breezy after overnight rain

Apart from the heavy rain that passed over before 8am, today was dry, though a glance at the sky throughout the day would have cast some doubts.  The clouds were often dark and broody, though there was still some blue sky and patches of occasional sunshine to be seen in between.  The blustery wind coming at us from the west made sure that the temperatures were held back, and its fair to say we expect better in July.

Similar day to yesterday

Yesterday's description was almost a perfect match to today's weather too.  A slightly keener wind, certainly a wind today rather than a breeze, kept the feel of the air on the cool side.  Despite this, in the sunshine, it felt quite pleasant, but the numerous cumulus mediocris clouds (fluffy white clouds with dark, flat bottoms) meant the sun was never out for long, and any warmth created by the sun quickly disappeared.  After tea, the wind died down swiftly, skies cleared, and despite the thermometer registering cooler, it actually felt more pleasant.  By late evening there were signs of a front approaching though, suggesting rain before dawn tomorrow.

Cool again, breezy but staying dry

Despite the thermometer pushing a fraction over 20°C around lunchtime, the wind today was much fresher, and with much more cloud about, sunny spells were fairly infrequent.  This meant the day felt on the cool side, not entirely suited to an afternoon in the garden despite a generally bright outlook.  Clouds were again mainly fair weather, but darker underneath with flat bottoms, fitting the classic profile of cumulus mediocris.

Another dry day, yes, two together - the first time we've truly been able to say that this month!  That says a lot about July this year: not the worst by any means but generally damp, wet at times and, with an exception at the start of the month, a tad cooler than we'd want.

Anyway, back to today, which was generally fine, sunny and warmer than of late, with a scattering of fair-weather cotton wool clouds.  Towards the afternoon there were signs of a change though - a drop in temperature, increasing amounts of cloud and clear indications of a weather front approaching from the west.
