A cheerful end to the month

Another significant band of rain passed through overnight, making the end of the month really quite wet, spoiling what has been a very dry spell.  By morning the rain had stopped and skies slowly started to clear.  Towards lunchtime the cloud had gradually dispersed to leave a reasonably sunny day if still a tad cool.  Winds are back in the north-west now, which is never a warm direction and temperatures reflected this, reaching only 10°C at lunchtime and feeling more like 7°C.

Heavy rain then more April showers

A wet spell during the night brought the most significant rain of the month, but by early morning there were signs that things would improve. After the rain cleared, the sun came out but just as quickly showers started to build and this set the pattern for the day. Some of the showers were heavy and even the odd clap of thunder, but it still felt cool in the noticeable westerly breeze.29 Apr Dashboard

Finally some typical April weather

The heavy showers that arrived late yesterday are continuing this morning, and yet it's still very chilly with a stiff breeze.  In between the showers, the sky brightened nicely and before too long the showers died away, leaving a largely fine day with some sunshine.  The wind, if anything, picked up, making it much windier than we've been used to for some time.

A chilly reminder

April seems to be drawing to a close by reminding us of the saying "Ne'er cast a clout 'till May be out."   The temperatures now are several degrees down on what they were at the end of last week, and a steady breeze today has meant it feels much colder the thermometer is recording.  What's more, looking at the forecast on the TV, the cold air mass that is now covering the country is set to stick around all week, bringing wintry conditions to the hills and perhaps even at lower levels too.

Today though this cold air really made its presence felt, with a sharp frost overnight that fortunately melted quickly once the sun got to work.  The glorious sunshine lasted all morning, which was near cloudless throughout, but in the afternoon we saw a gradual change as the cloud started to thicken.  Then by tea-time the showers gathered and we had a couple of quite heavy showers - our first taste of April showers for this year.

Sunny, but cold

The line of cloud that passed over late last night was indeed the transition from overcast and cloudy conditions to clear skies.  Of course, although we're now in late April, in our northern latitude this did mean an overnight frost, but also as conditions stayed favourable throughout the day, would we be in line for plenty of sunshine and warm temperatures?

Right on the first count, but wrong on the second - a chilly west-to-northwest breeze throughout the day meant that although the direct sun is now quite strong (as I discovered after being in the garden most of the day without a hat), if the wind isn't favourable then there's still a distinct chill in the air.  Still, few of us would grumble given the sunshine - you can always add layers to keep warm!

Dull, cool and damp

It's weekend and the good weather from last week has well and truly departed now.  Today was wet at times, cool and overcast.  As the light started to fade there was a brief glimpse of the sun as it set behind the school.  A stark back edge to the cloud cover hinted that tonight might be cold and clear, so maybe tomorrow might just be ok?

All change!

The day started brightly with once again clear skies, warm sunshine but an early morning chill in the air.  It didn't last though - thick cloud soon descended from the north and suddenly the air became noticeably damp and cool.  This lasted for most of the day with the occasional outbreak of light rain towards evening.  The forecasted rainfall stayed away though but our fine and dry spell has certainly come to an end - temperatures today were almost 8°C down on yesterday.

Strong spring sunshine

Another day of strong spring sunshine, and again our temperature record is broken, today reaching over the magic 20°C.  There were some subtle differences to yesterday though: not quite as cold overnight and during the afternoon we did see more in the way of cloud.  Subtle clues perhaps that the weather is changing?  Maybe, but not until Friday, so we're told.

Beautiful morning leads to a glorious day

A touch of frost on the car this morning but already the sun is getting to work and temperatures are on the rise. Throughout the day we saw blue skies, light winds and some strong April sunshine.  Oddly we did record a hint of 'rain' during the night - I can only assume it was early morning dew or frost as there were no clouds around!

Cooler, and cloud stubborn to break up

The dry weather continued, but it was a marked contrast to yesterday; the blue skies and hours of sunshine gave way during the night to stubborn cloud that had drifted in from across the Pennines.  Throughout the morning the cloud cover held firm, quite grey at times without ever really threatening rain.  By lunchtime, one or two breaks began to appear and in the afternoon the sun started to win through.  Really quite cold though in a quite raw easterly breeze.

Cloudless skies

Hardly a cloud in the sky today from start to finish.  A lovely day, quite cool first thing but quite pleasant in the sun by early afternoon despite a gentle north easterly breeze.  The sun is getting stronger now, certainly strong enough to burn me anyway, as I discovered after an afternoon gardening.

Turned out nice again

I don't know who made a catchphrase out of that but it seemed appropriate for today - a chilly start with high cloud that developed into a nice day with plenty of sunshine. It has been noticeably cooler due to a change in wind direction.  The good news is that the fine weather is set to last through the weekend!

Cooler after a weak front

A weak weather front, the remnants of something that brought substantial rain to Scotland over the past couple of days, meant cloud built by early morning. The front's energy had long gone though, so all we saw was a few spots of drizzle. By afternoon the cloud thinned and we saw a little sunshine, and hopefully this fair weather will stay with us now until after the weekend.

Warm overnight with a grey cloud cover, but gradually over the course of the morning the cloud started to break, so by afternoon we saw sunshine and blue skies.  Some high cloud remained but temperatures responded nicely in the spring sun, peaking at 15.3°C by late afternoon.  Clear skies continued after dark allowing temperatures to fall overnight.

The sun returns

A fine sunny morning, with a hint of frost on the windscreen first thing and a little mist in the high valleys around Darwen. Becoming hazy by lunchtime, then cloud gradually thickening to bring one or two spots of rain on the windscreen by tea-time.  The rain held off though through the evening, the cloud cover keeping the temperatures high overnight.

Grey and miserable

It's weekend, and after a sunny week, what do we have?  Rain and dull grey skies!  Overcast through to mid-morning but then patchy rain set in and stayed with us for much of the day, becoming more persistent for a time in the afternoon.  Drying by evening but still cloudy and dull.

Rain, then much cooler

Heavy rain came through overnight, finally clearing by mid-morning.  We were left with a much cooler day with a brisk north westerly wind that really took the edge off the temperatures still further, making it feel quite raw.

The sun did come out quite regularly in the afternoon, but today was a big contrast to the calm and warm weather of the last week.  It did help this lovely old Magnolia tree, taken in Astley Park, Chorley, show off against a brilliant blue sky.

Hazy spring warmth - but rain on the way

To those who only take a passing interest in the weather it might feel like every day is the same at the moment, but each day this week there's been some subtle changes going on, and today's no exception.  Whilst calm, sunny and, let's face it, an all round nice day again, there is much more haze in the air today and the breeze has increased, which has just taken the edge of what the temperatures feel like.

And there is more substantial change on the way too - there's a cold front moving through overnight so we'll see some rain for the first time in a while, but while it won't be the only spell of wet weather this weekend, there will be some more dry weather in between and it's forecast to be nice again next week.

There was no mist this morning, and although it was cool early on, it was bearable and without any frost.  Temperatures climbed steadily in the warm spring sunshine, breaking records for Oakdale Weather Station, with the gentle breeze turning more towards the south.  The fine and sunny weather continued all day and skies remained clear even after the sun went down.

Mist clearing away for sunshine

Another misty start, but it gradually cleared, first to cloud and then fizzling away altogether to leave a bright, sunny day. Temperatures cool first thing, but my decision to leave the coat at home paid off as the return journey home was very pleasant.

Lingering mist

It promised a repeat of yesterday so we were hopeful when we pulled back the curtains to see must over the fields.  But today, unlike yesterday, the mist took much longer to go. By early afternoon, the sun finally won through, leaving a sunny afternoon allowing temperatures to rise. By evening though the dampness in the air soon returned, and the mist descended again by nightfall.

A sunny Easter Day

Who says the weather's always bad at Easter?  It's not been great all week and the Easter holidays didn't get off to the best of starts on Good Friday, but yesterday was better and after some early morning mist and cloud this morning, the sun has come out.  For the most part it's been a lovely day, and temperatures responded with another pleasant 12°c again in the afternoon.  With lighter winds too, it's actually felt warmer - a high apparent temperature over 10°c in warm April sunshine is much more like it.

March 2015 Monthly Report

March 2015 has in many ways been a typical March - one where it felt like two months rolled into one.  We've had generally settled, if slightly cool weather for most of the month, but also two notable spells of rain - between the 8th and 13th and again between the 23rd and 31st.  This wet spell at the end of the month gave us 38mm of rain, with 15mm alone on the 30th, and altogether this accounted for 60% of the rain for the entire month.

During the drier spells it's often felt very pleasant.  We reached a maximum temperature quite early in the month, a heady 14.3°c on March 7th, but all this does is highlight how temperatures have generally been suppressed ever since.  More than half the month shows a predominant wind direction between a westerly to a north-westerly, and this has been the reason why there's been an edge to the temperatures throughout.  This isn't untypical for March, and the prevailing weather pattern has been very March-like, with several low pressure systems running through over Scotland or further north, and us picking up a cold airflow from the North Atlantic.

March 2015 Dashboard

We've had some strong winds too, particularly at the end of the month, where we recorded our highest wind speeds to date (since November 2014).  Apart from a calm spell in the middle of the month, the wind has been noticeable throughout.

So how does this March compare to a 'typical' March in Blackburn?  Based on data from MSN and Weatherbase.com, March in Blackburn should average about 7°c, with mean highs around 9°c and lows around 3°c.  We recorded a mean temperature of 5.2°c, with a mean maximum of 8.8°c and mean minimum of 1.6°c.  So, simply looking at average temperatures, this March was slightly cooler than we'd expect.  Our 64.8mm of rain is close to the 61.9mm figure reported by MSN for our area, but some way above 50mm reported on Weatherbase.com.  Having lived in Blackburn all my life, I'd expect the higher figure to be closer to the mark, which means our rainfall has been pretty typical.  We had 19 days when rain fell, close to the 20 and 21 reported on the internet, so again fairly typical.  Our two days of snow (although fairly insignificant on both occasions) is what we'd expect for a Blackburn March too.

All in all we're not seeing anything out of the ordinary at the moment, but after a cool winter we're looking forward to some better weather to come as spring takes hold.

Easter Saturday and it's improving

High pressure is starting to build but it's not wall to wall sunshine as there's still plenty of cloud about.  The cloud did start to break giving spells of sunshine and temperatures started to climb, reaching just over 12°c by mid afternoon.  Winds have been fairly light and apparently the fair weather is set to continue for at least a week - good news!

A Good Friday - but the weather's not so good

It's a bank holiday and guess what - the weather hasn't played ball.  Well actually it wasn't too bad, better than recently anyway, but for most of the day it was overcast, drizzly and damp.  At least the temperatures weren't too bad, and with high pressure forecast to move across, hopefully things look a little better for the rest of the Easter holidays.

Much improved

A much nicer day than we've seen for several days now; a little rain in the early hours but then much of the day was dry, sunny and warmer.  The sky gradually became hazy by tea-time as a band of rain began to move in, but with sunshine and much lighter winds for the most part, the weather was much improved.
